Empowering women to take charge of their sexual health

Informing women about biomedical HIV prevention methods
Connecting women to community resources
Mobilizing key community stakeholders and providers

This important event will take place on Friday, May 4, 2018, at the Roz and Cal Kovens Center on Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay Campus in North Miami Beach.

Women overall have been at a disadvantage in the HIV epidemic due to gender differences and norms that shape biological, social and economic vulnerability. Racial and ethnic disparities magnify the risk. Living in a high prevalence area such as South Florida significantly increases their risk. South Florida’s new HIV diagnoses are now triple the national average due to rates in Miami-Dade and Broward counties in its African American, Latino, and Haitian communities. Minority women are one of the most affected groups in South Florida.

Options to help women remain HIV free have been limited, and the absence of practical female-controlled prevention strategies and relative dependence on the cooperative use of the male condom continue to keep women’s HIV vulnerability high.

Our goal is to mobilize and engage the community to take action in informing and updating women on the full range of biomedical preventive methods that are available to them.

We thank our major sponsor Gilead for their incredible support.
We also thank our other sponsors CVS, look forward to many more, and to building a long and prosperous working relationship.
